View Device Manager Status

In Windows you often have a CD or DVD drive this not working for some reason.  It could be a driver, or possibly more.  This should be one of the things you check if your drive is not  working or you have a yellow exclamation point in your device manager.To start checking you need to first select your operating system from the list below:

Windows XP

  1. Open Device Manager
  2. Right click on the hardware your looking for and click properties

If it is working properly you will read the following:

This device is working properly.

If you are having problems with this device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter

If it is not working properly you will read something similar to the following:

Error Message. (Code 00)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device.

You should proceed to then troubleshoot your device based on the Device Manager Error Code.

Windows Vista

  1. Open the Device Manager
  2. Locate the Device you want to check
  3. Right click the device and select properties
  4. In the properties area locate
  5. Locate the device status

If your device is working you should read:

This device is working properly.

If its not you should read something similar to:

Error Message. (Code 00)

Click ‘Check for solutions’ to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available.

You should proceed to then troubleshoot your device based on the Device Manager Error Code.
